The independent charity provides help, support and a range of activities for children and adults with learning disabilities, and following the investment of £2.6m into a purpose built facility they plan to create a space which offers something for everyone in the local community.
In addition to enabling Leeds Mencap to expand their services for those with learning disabilities and their families, the new centre will be home to a brand new community nursery as well as providing activity space for a number of other community groups. Set to open its doors in spring, the charity has a number of items they are hoping to secure in order to ensure that all parts of the building can be fully operational from day one. From large items like furniture for reception to smaller pieces like a salt bin, any help provided will take them one step closer to launch. Although not an exhaustive list, other contributions being sought after are stationery supplies, external storage units, snow shovels, white goods for the kitchen and a table football game for the youth clubs. The campaign was given a fantastic boost by local company The Technology Group. Not only are two of their directors about to trek the Sahara to raise funds, but they have generously agreed to supply communications technology to the value of £50,000 for the new centre. The Technology Group Sales Director Jonathan Marsden said: “It is our pleasure to help with such a great cause in our local community and we hope that our donation goes some way towards making the centre successful. The Technology Group will continue to support Leeds Mencap with the service we provide for them, and with any other fundraising we can contribute to. I urge other businesses to get involved in any way they can, a small amount from a business can make a big difference to a charity.” Commenting on the call for contributions, Head of Fundraising Sarah Hooker said: “Our ongoing capital appeal is enabling us to get the building in place, and now we also need some help to put the crucial finishing touches in place. We are extremely grateful to The Technology Group, and I hope that more companies are able to come forward and get involved with this fantastic project. “Not only will the new centre enable us to help more people in desperate need of support, but it will provide a place for community groups to meet, for children to benefit from attending nursery, for families to hold parties and celebrations and much more.” Original article was posted here by Leeds Mencap
